Project
Personalized Shopping Experience
The problem
By default, Shopify picks the first variant for you, usually the smallest size. Customers can hit "Add to Cart" without ever consciously choosing their size. For shoes, that's a quiet setup for wrong-size orders.
Why it matters
Size and fit is the #1 reason people return shoes bought online. Nike alone gets over 500,000 size/fit complaints a year, and studies show 63 to 72% of people wear shoes that don't properly fit. Every wrong-size order costs roughly double to process as a return compared to just shipping it right the first time.
What we built
Custom code that removes the pre-selected variant on page load. The customer sees a blank state and must actively pick a size before they can add to cart. No accidental defaults, no auto-fill.
The outcome
Fewer wrong-size orders reaching checkout
Lower return/reshipping costs
Customers make one confident choice instead of "grab it and sort it out later"
Matches the pattern used by major footwear brands like Nike
